What is Pyrogallol?
Pyrogallol is a toxic white crystalline powder and a powerful reducing agent. When in alkaline solution, it absorbs oxygen from the air, turning purple from a colourless solution. It can be used in this way to calculate the amount of oxygen in air.
Pyrogallol is a trihydroxybenzene, obtained by the action of heat on gallic acid. It occurs in light, white, feathery or dense, hard crystals, which become discoloured on exposure to light and air. On careful heating it should sublime without residue.
The solution in water should be clear, colourless, and neutral. A solution of pyrogallol gives a green colour with solution of ferrous sulphate, a red colour with solution of ferric chloride, and rapidly turns black in contact with air and alkalies. The acid should be kept in well-closed amber-coloured bottles and not exposed to light.
As chemical reagent and medical intermediates, pyrogallol is widely used in fine chemicals, new-type photosensitive material, food preserving, new medicine for heart and mental diseases, tumor, senile dementia and mental disorder, textiles printing and dyeing, light industry, color printing and plate making, microelectronic industry.
–Medicine and Pharmaceutical intermediate
Pyrogallol is a powerful antiseptic by reason of its affinity for oxygen. It is used as an antiseptic and mildly irritant ointment in chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis, also to destroy lupus; it is of value as a parasiticide in ringworm. Mixed with four times its weight of starch, the acid is applied as a powder to phagedaenic chancres.
Pyrogallol used as oxygen absorber in gas analysis. When in alkaline solution, it absorbs oxygen from the air, turning purple from a colourless solution. It can be used in this way to calculate the amount of oxygen in air.
–Powerful reducing agent
Largely used as a reducing agent in photography. Used as film developer, infrared photography thermosensitive agent, styrene and polystyrene block poly poly agent as well as heat sensitizer and polymerization inhibitor..
Pyrogallol can stain the skin and hair black. Used as natural hair color dyeing agent in cosmeic. Stains upon the skin may be removed with ammonium persulphate. Or used in other dye intermediates, colored leather, fur.
–Pesticide (Bendiocarb) and insecticide in agriculture
Pyrogallol has function of anti-bacteria. As natural insecticide, It will not hurt plant and no pesticide residues in plant after spraying pyrogallol mixed with water.
